Grocery Outlet to open in old Safeway on Bay Street

I’ve got good news to share: Grocery Outlet is coming to the old Safeway! This will fill an important void left for thousands of neighbors across North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Russian Hill to have access to affordable groceries.

Last year when Safeway announced it was closing, I sprang into action and started a petition that garnered nearly 1,000 signatures in a few days. I spoke with local media about how important a replacement grocery store was. I met numerous times with the Grocery Outlet team and new owners of the Northpoint Center.

Read more about the news in today's SF Chronicle:

"It comes more than a year after Danny Sauter, a resident of the area who is vying to become its supervisor in the November election, launched an online petition calling for an affordable grocer to replace Safeway, which closed last May."

I’ve been working to make sure all stakeholders heard loud and clear that our neighborhood wants — needs — an affordable grocery store. Well, they heard us! Thanks to everyone who helped amplify this need.

You may remember that this isn’t the first time our collective voices have made an impact. A few years ago, when the current leadership blocked El Farolito from coming to North Beach, we helped reverse that decision.

Together, we’re taking on broken systems — the same insider, machine politics backing my opponents — and getting better outcomes so our neighborhoods can access affordable grocery stores and family-owned Mexican restaurants.

This is what community organizing is all about, and it shows why I’m ready to lead as your next District 3 Supervisor. I hope you’ll join me at an upcoming volunteer event soon to keep our momentum going!
