Issues

We all love San Francisco, but we know our city has big challenges. Decades of obstruction and ideology from political insiders have taken us off track. Danny Sauter is running for Supervisor because he loves San Francisco and he wants to help lead its recovery and resurgence. As Supervisor, Danny will fight to get results for all of our District 3 neighborhoods.

Safer Neighborhoods

Public safety is the foundation of our city and we need to act quickly to make sure everyone feels – and is – safe. As Supervisor, Danny will:

  • Increase funding to staff our first responder network, from police officers to 911 dispatchers

  • Prioritize hiring of bilingual officers speaking Cantonese and Mandarin to serve our diverse communities

  • Retain our district station captains longer to build important community relationships

  • Invest in proven community policing tactics such as footbeat patrols, ambassador programs, and collaboration with street crisis response teams

Danny’s leadership on public safety is clear: he is endorsed by Sheriff Paul Miyamoto and the Deputy Sherffis’ Association, has led safety town halls and police merchant walks in his neighborhood, and he supported March 2024’s Prop E to improve public safety.

Affordable Housing and Renter Protections

San Francisco’s housing crisis, largely of our own making, has pushed families and middle-class residents out and is at the core of so many of our city’s challenges. We can build more housing and protect our vulnerable communities. As Supervisor, Danny will:

  • Protect rent control and expand proven investments in protecting renters including emergency rental vouchers, tenant attorneys, and SRO collaboratives

  • Reduce the bureaucratic hurdles that make it so hard to build more housing by streamlining approvals, reducing duplicative processes, and modernizing our permit system

  • Prioritize affordable, senior, and family housing in District 3 with a new Special Use District to encourage more homes that meet community needs

  • Give neighbors a seat at the table in making decisions around land use through transparent meetings and project timelines

Danny is a 10+ year renter in North Beach and, if elected, would be only the 2nd renter on the Board of Supervisors. Danny was named the first-ever Chair of the San Francisco Sierra Club’s Housing Committee, and he has supported thousands of new affordable and senior homes throughout San Francisco with his pro-housing and pro-renter advocacy.

Downtown and Small Business Recovery

The slow recovery of downtown and the Financial District puts our budget and entire city’s services at risk. Downtown can longer be just about work and offices, it needs to look like a more diverse 24/7 neighborhood. As Supervisor, Danny will:

  • Add thousands of new homes by converting empty offices and bringing new energy and foot traffic to our downtown core

  • Maintain clean and safe streets to welcome workers and conference-goers while changing the narrative about San Francisco’s conditions

  • Open new pedestrian plazas and entertainment zones to support small businesses and give more reasons to stay (or come) downtown during all hours of the day

  • Pursue bold new initiatives to establish a university downtown, filling empty office space and bringing bright minds to our city

  • Make it easier to start a small business downtown and all throughout San Francisco by cutting red tape, removing fees, and strengthening public safety

Danny knows what it takes to grow small businesses that contribute to San Francisco, because he’s done it before – twice. Danny founded a marketing agency that he grew from 2 people to 50 people on Columbus Ave, and also led the effort to start the North Beach Farmers Market which he manages to this day.

Treatment, Not Tents

To save lives and heal our city, we need bold action to meet the crisis on our streets. The homelessness and drug crisis demand us to take new approaches and do so with urgency. As Supervisor, Danny will:

  • Expand conservatorship to compel those on our streets who are in the most need of help the services they need

  • Disrupt drug dealing by arresting and incarcerating drug dealers with special enhancements for fentanyl. Sustain these operations through coordinated efforts between law enforcement, health officials, and federal resources

  • Lower barriers to accessing recovery by expanding hours and incentivizing or mandating treatment

  • Improve permanent supportive housing outcomes by expanding sober-living facilities, investing in staff and services, and

  • Stop homelessness in the first place through targeted investments in emergency rental vouchers and eviction defense resources

  • Audit spending to ensure that dollars are going to the programs and approaches that are most effective at saving lives and getting individuals into housing

Cleaner Streets

Dirty streets are frustrating for residents, embarrassing for tourists, and bad for small businesses. Our government needs to be more responsive and get the basics right. As Supervisor, Danny will:

  • Add 1,500 new trash cans to cut down on trash in our neighborhoods

  • Expand street cleaning teams to improve conditions in our streets, sidewalks, and parks

  • Cut down on graffiti and vandalism that hurts our small businesses

  • Plant 1,000 new street trees to beautify our neighborhoods

Danny isn’t waiting until he gets in office to start: he’s been leading cleanups with his neighborhood association for the past 8 years, he partnered to bring new Big Belly trash cans to District 3, and he secured funding for dozens of new trees and sidewalk gardens in North Beach.

Improving Our Neighborhoods

Even as he tackles our biggest citywide challenges, Danny’s first priority will always be to deliver block-by-block results for our District 3 neighborhoods. Building on his 10+ years as a community organizer, Danny will champion these neighborhood projects:

  • Fill Vacant Storefronts on Polk Street

Polk Street suffers from massive retail vacancies which divide our neighborhoods and contribute to blight. Danny will target legislation and resources to support existing Polk Street merchants and make it easier for new ones to open up in vacant storefronts. Danny will bring lessons learned from North Beach, where he led a successful effort to reduce record-level vacancies and spur a small business renaissance.

  • Create New Open Space in Lower Nob Hill

Danny will establish a new mini-park in the Lower Nob Hill area, bringing much-needed open space to one of San Francisco’s densest areas. He’ll do this alongside more cleaning and greening services for Lower Nob Hill to improve street conditions and cleanliness.

  • Extend the Central Subway to North Beach & Fisherman’s Wharf

Danny has championed the acquisition of a vacant, fire-damaged property across from Washington Square Park to build new housing and establish space for a future subway station in North Beach. Danny will fight for federal funding to finish the Central Subway all the way to Fisherman’s Wharf, fully connecting our eastern neighborhoods and reducing traffic congestion.

  • Clean Streets in Every Neighborhood

Danny knows our streets are too dirty because he has been leading neighborhood cleanups for the past 8 years across District 3. He has a plan for cleaner streets through more trash cans, better pickup schedules, expanded street cleaning and power washing, and taking graffiti and vandalism seriously.
