Transit
Public transit drives the success of our economy and will help ensure the survival of our planet. For too long, we have been a transit-first city in theory only. We must finally have the vision and follow-through to build a world-class transit system.
Here’s what I’ll do as Supervisor:
Extend the Central Subway. We must continue the Central Subway with stops in North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf. This work can only be done by working to avoid the mistakes already made in the initial construction. That means careful review of contracts, actions to reduce waste and costly delays, and stringent accountability at all phases of the project. We can do this by adding a North Beach subway stop and housing at the long-vacant building across from Washington Square Park. Read more in my op-ed.
Make Muni safe, clean, and reliable - To make public transportation more attractive, it needs to be safe, clean, and reliable. We can make riding transit a safer experience by expanding transit ambassadors and partnering with the District Attorney to not tolerate harassment on Muni, double the cleaning schedule of buses and transit shelters, and invest in modern technology to keep our vehicles running smoothly.
Take real action on pedestrian safety. No one should be forced to risk their life to cross the street. Better infrastructure and safer street design can save lives, but we also need automated speed enforcement technology and for a restoration of manual traffic safety enforcement from SFPD.
Make it safer and easier to get around by bicycle. Thanks to e-bikes, getting around by bike is more accessible to all ages and abilities than ever before. Unfortunately, even as the rest of the city has made progress to build protected bike lanes, District 3 has seen no real improvements. We also need to expand our bike share stations so that it is available to residents in every neighborhood.
Add housing at Kirkland MUNI Yard. The #1 reason cited by SFMTA for delayed transit service is operator shortages that number in the hundreds, driven by lack of affordable housing. We can make progress here by converting District 3’s MUNI Yard at Fisherman’s Wharf into housing available to MUNI operators. Read more in my op-ed.
